From Zero to Visible: What 21 Days of Building in Public Taught Me About Brand Growth

Image
3 weeks ago, I stopped waiting for the perfect plan and started building in public. No clients. No fancy portfolio. Just a desire to grow and the courage to document it in real time. I launched The Founding Marketer as my digital test lab. A space to share my journey of becoming an SEO brand strategist , one imperfect, intentional step at a time. Here are 5 raw lessons I’ve learned about visibility (so far): 1 . You don’t need clients to be valuable. I’m treating my brand like a client. Running SEO experiments. Documenting results. That’s a real, shareable experience. 2 . Content builds confidence. I hadn’t written creatively in 5+ years. Starting again felt awkward like speaking in public on shaky legs. But every blog post and every idea I shape into content is a step toward reclaiming my voice. Confidence doesn’t come before you create. It comes because you create. 3 . Visibility is a habit, not a hack. I show up 5x a week on LinkedIn. I repurpose. I engage. I treat each post as a p...

Starting My Digital Marketing Journey: SEO, Content & Productivity Hacks

Let’s be honest—I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life for the longest time.

As a computer science graduate, I thought my career path would be obvious. But instead of feeling certain, I felt stuck. I kept bouncing between different career optionscoding, design, data, and business—without fully committing to any of them, just waiting for something to click.

One thing I was sure about? Marketing was NOT on my list.

I thought marketing was just about selling random products, running ads, and convincing people to buy things they didn’t need. It seemed complicated, kind of boring, and definitely not for me. So, I ignored it completely.

But here’s the thing—just because you ignore something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

How It Finally Clicked (After a LOT of Procrastination)

At some point, I started noticing digital marketing everywhere.

Not because it magically appeared, but because I was finally paying attention. Suddenly, words like SEO, content marketing, and social media strategy were popping up all over my feed. These weren’t just buzzwords—they were actual skills people were using to build brands, grow businesses, and make an impact.

That’s when it hit me: Digital marketing isn’t just about selling—it’s about storytelling, problem-solving, and strategy. And once I saw it that way I couldn’t unsee it.

But there was still a problem…

I was so excited about digital marketing that I wanted to learn everything at oncedownloading countless courses on SEO, content marketing and SMM instead of taking it one step at a time.

The result? Overwhelm. I had no idea where to start, so I did what any overwhelmed person doesprocrastinate. A lot.

Trying to balance SEO, content marketing, and productivity—this is how it feels sometimes!

I’d tell myself I was going to study SEO or content marketing, but instead, I’d end up scrolling social media, binge-watching YouTube videos that had nothing to do with learning, or just lying around doing nothing. I didn’t really like reading, so diving into blogs or long articles felt like a chore. I was already sick of it before I even started.

And honestly? I wasn’t taking it seriously.

I kept convincing myself I’d "start tomorrow." Then tomorrow turned into next week. Then next week turned into.... well, maybe later.

How I’m Trying to Overcome It

I realized that if I kept slacking off, I’d stay stuck in the same place. So, I decided to switch things up:

  •  Breaking learning into small stepsInstead of trying to “learn everything” at once, I focus on one thing at a time.
           Today, maybe it's SEO basics.
        ♦   Tomorrow, content writing.

    Small steps feel less overwhelming.

  • Using different learning styles – Since I don’t like reading long articles and more of a visual learner, I mix up my learning methods:
Short videos & podcasts (instead of long blogs).
Interactive courses to keep me engaged.
♦ Real-world application (like this blog) instead of passive learning.

  • Actually applying what I learn – Instead of just reading about digital marketing, I’m working on real projects to put my knowledge to use.
  •  Holding myself accountable – Writing about my journey keeps me motivated because now, I have people watching. No more “I’ll start tomorrow” excuses.
